Really Rolling Stone?

by mallory898 in PR Connections

Well, I guess it was bound to happen. On Friday, March 11th, Rolling Stone will release its March cover with reality star Nicole Polizzi, more commonly known as “Snooki.” If you don’t already know, Snooki is part of MTV’s cast of Jersey Shore, a show thats about partying, eating, and “guidos.” When Rolling Stone released the cover, artists such as Ne-Yo were not impressed. he posted on Twitter account, “No disrespect to Snooki, I don’t know her, but damn Rolling Stone?”

The magazine, which focuses mainly on on music, took a different approach by having a reality star on the front cover. Dedicated readers may or may not enjoy this month’s cover. However, putting the hit reality star on the cover can draw in new readers to the magazine.

Another star that was upset with the cover was hit artist Pink. She also posted on her Facebook status, “ “Dear Rolling Stone, Really?”

Snooki herself was surprised she was asked to pose on the cover, wear she is wearing cowboys boots and twirling a lasso.

My guess: Jersey Shore viewers are going to love it. Rolling Stone readers: not so much.

Ray Lewis: A Dream to Make Polk County a Better Place

A graduate of Kathleen High School and now NFL star-player for the Baltimore Ravens, Ray Lewis has returned to his hometown of Lakeland with hopes to make a difference in the community and help youth at risk.

Founder of the Ray Lewis 52 Foundation, it is his dream and mission to provide personal and economic assistance to troubled youth.

He is greatly known for being a strong leader both on and off the field, who has the desire and will to make sure things get done. Well-known for all of his charity work in the Baltimore area, Ray now wants to bring that back to his hometown and make this community a better place.

Lewis said in an interview with the Lakeland Ledger, “This has always been a dream of mine. This is the ultimate. We have all the beautiful people of our city come together for one common goal – not to make money or any of that stuff – but to affect lives.”

The Ray Lewis Foundation kicked off its series of events with a charity bowling tournament held in Lakeland at Orange Bowl Lanes on March 31. Ray was in attendance, as well as many other celebrities including Bo Jackson, Roy Jones Jr., Doug Williams, and Ahmad Black.

As the reigning Miss Lakeland, I was fortunate enough to be a part of these events as well. I attended the bowling tournament and bowled as one of the “celebrity bowlers.” It was truly such an amazing event to see all of these people come together for the common cause of making our community a better place.

After meeting Ray Lewis and spending time with him before the tournament, I learned he truly is a man of such inspiration and desire. His determination to help this community makes him such an admirable role model to others and I was so grateful for the opportunity to particpate in this charitable event to help benefit the Ray Lewis 52 Foundation.

LOVE Viral Videos!

“David After Dentist” has over 87 million hits on YouTube! Now, that’s what I call a viral video!

This simple video grabs the attention of millions because it showcases a cute boy and he adds humor into a very unfortunate dentist experience that no one wants to go through. My favorite part of the video is when he sits up in his booster seat and screams at the top of his lungs and then falls right back down to this seat! I couldn’t stop laughing!

One of my favorite viral videos is “Talking Twin Babies.” Check it out! It has over 19 million hits on YouTube.

I think that it is absolutely hysterical because the video captures two babies having a legit conversation. I think the video proves that babies have their own language and they are able communicate with one another.  No one else can understand them, but they seem to be having a good time together!

Another one of my favorite viral videos is the “Bed Intruder Song.” It has over 78 million hits on YouTube!

This video has been one of my favorites for a long time! The song lyrics tell a story that was originally a live news report. The news report isn’t funny by any means, but when they created the video to lighten up the situation and add some humor, I couldn’t help but laugh!

Antoine Dodson, the star of “hide your kids, hide your wife” lyrics, has become a viral video celebrity! He was a guest on MTV for the ball drop in Times Square on New Years Eve and he reported that gets paid thousands of dollars to make appearances at clubs.

Who would have ever thought that a viral video could make someone famous! It’s about time that we all start making videos and uploading them to YouTube, in hopes that we will some day become famous!

Checkout Kneale Mann!

Our Professor Barbara Nixon does it again! She proves that you can truly form friendships and establish business partners just by connecting through social media.

I watched another 20-minute video interview between professor Nixon and Kneale Mann. Mann is from Canada and they have never met in person, but have talked several times through blogging.

I learned many interesting things about social media from the interview!

Mann talks about Twitter being a micro-blog. Every time you tweet about a company or every time a business tweets, they are essentially starting a mini blog.

People need to understand that the purpose of Twitter isn’t just a status update like Facebook. Use Twitter to your advantage! Focus on the message that you are trying to spread, not the amount of followers you have. If you are tweeting valuable information, you will gain more followers.

Mann also gives great information about blogging. It’s important to blog about topic that is important to you.

Blog about an experience that you had or something that people can relate too. If you blog about something that your passionate it about, the flow of your writing will come naturally.

Blog comments are also really important in the world of social media. They are essential to the writer because it motivates them to keep blogging.

Professor Nixon has already taught me a lot about leaving blog comments and Mann solidified the importance.

I know that blog comments need to give the writer valuable feedback, rather then  information like, “Great blog!” You also don’t want your blog comments to be too lengthy.

Just like Martin Waxman said, it’s vital to proofread your writing, especially when it pertains to blogs. You will lose credibility if your blog comments have misspelled words or grammar mistakes.

I highly recommend this video interview between Professor Nixon and Kneale Mann! It really makes me look at Twitter and blogging in a totally different way!

Palette Public Relations Inc.

Martin Waxman, president and co-founder of Palette Public Relations Inc., gave a great 25-minute interview with professor Barbara Nixon. Waxman offered valuable information about PR and how to be successful.

Palette Public Relations Inc. was founded on 3 Pillars:

  1. Simplicity
  2. Energy
  3. Integrity

Waxman explains the importance of simplicity because its important to always do everything that you can to make your life and your client’s life easier.

Every company needs energy and motivation. Don’t give up until you get the results that you’re looking for.

Integrity is one of the key characteristics that a company needs. It is important to be up front and honest with your clients.

In this interview, Waxman talked about traditional media versus social media.

He used the example of what he would be looking for if he were to hire a potential candidate for the Palette Public Relations team.

  1. The candidate would need to have the traditional skills of PR
  2. They would have to have an understanding of social media
  3. They would have to be knowledgeable of PR professionals
  4. Be on Twitter

Waxman talked about the importance of blogging and the impact that it can have on your readers. He was even looking to hire someone, but decided against it when he noticed all the grammar mistakes and spelling errors in their blog. You become less credible when you have mistakes in your blog.

He  also gave great advice about social media monitoring. If you type a company’s name and then the word “fail” into a search engine, the company can see if people are writing negative things about your company all over the internet.

I would recommend this interview to any student who is striving to be a PR professional. It really makes you aware that traditional media is still very prevalent and social media is continuously expanding with new technology.

PROpenMic…Get Connected!

WOW! PROpenMic is amazing! It is a social network where students, faculty and PR professionals can connect and learn from one another. It’s like Facebook, in the sense where you can update your profile, add friends, upload pictures and videos.

PROpenMic has many features, but I am going to share my top 3 favorite things about the website.

1. The job and internship tab is very beneficial to college undergraduates and graduate students.  PROpenMic provides links to indeed.com and jobster.com. The website also provides a “TwitJobSearch” that maps out jobs in North America, Europe, East Asia and Africa.

2. PROpenMic allows you to share videos with one another.

The first video I watched called “Selinah Has Aids” caught  my attention because the heading states that it is Persuasive, Creative, Worth Your Time. You can also watch the video on YouTube.  It is sad, but very touching.

3. Participate in all of the events!

The events are conferences and workshops that take place all over the world. PROpenMic provides places, dates of when the conferences take place. The conferences and workshops offer information about pubic relations, social media, networking and blogging. They provide you with helpful tips that can help your company capture the attention of its audience.

PROpenMic also offers webinar events. A webinar is used to conduct live meetings or presentations over the internet.

I have to say, there is only one thing I don’t like about PROpenMic. In my opinion the main page is very cluttered.  There is so much going on that it was a little overbearing when I first created my account.

Even though the main page is a little overwhelming,  I am able to explore the site and learn more about the PR world! I will definitely visit PROpenMic often!

Expand Your Knowledge Through Podcasts

Are you familiar with podcasts? A podcast is a digital visual or audio media file that can be downloaded onto your computer or iPod. I started to become familiar with podcasts when I bought my first iPod.

When accessing your iTunes, you can go to the podcast section and subscribe to hundreds of podcasts for free and then download them onto your iPod!

Organizations can connect with its publics through podcasting, because it allows people to listen to what the organization has to say when they are going about their day-to-day routines. If people like listening to an organization’s podcasts, they can spread the word to their friends and fellow employers.

One of my roommates has to travel from Lakeland to Orlando every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for an internship with the Orlando Predators. While taking the drive three times a week, she connects her iPod to her car radio and listens to the Sports Business Radio podcast.

Because she is striving to be a successful sports management employer, she feels that listening to these podcasts will benefit her by making her more knowledgeable of the hot topics in the sports industry. She learned some information about the NBA Player’s Association from the Sports Business Radio podcast and was able to talk about it with some of her fellow internship colleagues.

Striving to be a Public Relation professional, I know that we can definitely benefit from listening to podcasts by staying informed on the latest news in the P.R. world! For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report, is a very popular podcast that gives weekly commentary on public relations.

The most recent For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report podcast that I listened to is the  FIR Interview: Jackie Mitchell on Every 80 Seconds from American Red Cross of Greater Chicago.

In the interview co-host Shel Holtz speaks with Jackie Mitchell, director of marketing and communications for the Red Cross’ Chicago region, about the implementation of a campaign that exists without hardly using the Red Cross’ website, but by using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social channels.

I feel as if many people don’t listen to podcasts because they don’t fully understand what they are and the benefits that they offer. So, to had some humor into understanding podcasts, check out the Ask Ninja: Special Delivery 1 “What is Podcasting?” YouTube video that has over 4,000,000 hits!
